Welcome to Philosophy at Cal State Fullerton
We are an enthusiastic department of faculty and students devoted to the study of Philosophy.
We emphatically believe that training in Philosophy can make us better critical thinkers, and better critical writers. Philosophy teaches us how to recognize and evaluate arguments, and make distinctions. Philosophy also teaches us to see the world differently—more accurately; and helps us notice important things we had missed. Philosophy is useful no matter what sort of life one decides to live, because it makes us better thinkers.
We value excellence in teaching. As a solely undergraduate department, with a Major, a Minor, and a Concentration, we are devoted to training our students in four broad categories: the History of Philosophy, Philosophical Argument and Writing, Ethics and Social/Political Philosophy, and Metaphysics and Epistemology. Our course offerings are wide: everything from Symbolic Logic to Asian Philosophy to Existentialism.
We value excellence in research and pluralism. Our faculty are energetic scholars, with recent publications in the following areas: Animal Studies; Asian Philosophy; Bioethics; Experimental Philosophy; Philosophy of Emotion; Feminist Philosophy; Philosophy of Film; Phenomenology; Pragmatism; Nietzsche; Social and Political Philosophy; and Virtue Epistemology.
We value doing philosophy at conferences. Our "Symposium", held every year in the Spring, has been in existence for over 40 years. We have hosted FullPhil conferences on Empathy (2006) and Virtue and Vice (2008).
We hope to see you in our classes and at our conferences! Welcome to the Philosophy Department at Cal State Fullerton.
